Its own support base carries 156 pages on French door cabinets and 140 on side-by-side, but only 24 and 9 of those are code pages, and on the top-freezer cabinet — 82 pages — there are none at all. That is not an oversight in our research. It is how the make works: Whirlpool talks when it cooks and washes, and it goes quiet when it chills. So a refrigerator call here starts with measurement rather than with a display.     Refrigerator is not cooling

    This is where Whirlpool goes quiet. Its top-freezer branch publishes 82 pages and not one error code; its side-by-side branch publishes 140 pages and nine. Where an F code does appear on a refrigerator, the maker publishes the fact that an F is flashing and, on the pages behind it, does not publish what each one means. So this diagnosis is measured, not read.

    There are only a few places the water can come from, and telling them apart is mostly a question of where it appears and whether it is clean. Whirlpool publishes seven separate leaking pages across its refrigeration branch and no code for any of them, so this one is found by looking rather than by reading a display.

    Frost inside, or the outside is sweating

    Whirlpool publishes five pages on frosting and condensation across its refrigeration branch and no code for any of it, which is fair: these are things you see rather than things the machine measures. In South Florida both of them are more common than the design assumed, because both are driven by the amount of water in the air around the appliance.

    Whirlpool's upright freezer branch publishes 63 pages and not a single error code. There is nothing to look up, and the compartment cannot tell you what is wrong. What it does tell you is a temperature, and the difference between 5 degrees and 20 degrees decides whether this is tonight's problem or next week's appointment.

    An ice maker is a small machine with one job and several ways to be interrupted, and Whirlpool publishes 20 pages across ice production, low production and ice quality without a code for any of it. What it does publish is a filter status light — and the note that it does not reset by itself when the filter is changed, which explains a good number of these calls.

    Most installations on this make are replacements, and that is worth saying out loud. The owner has just weighed a two-hundred-dollar repair against a nine-hundred-dollar machine and chosen the machine.     Refrigerator not cooling repair

    A Whirlpool that has stopped cooling will not name the part for you. This make publishes 24 code pages across its French door line, nine on side-by-side and none whatsoever on top freezers, so a warm cabinet arrives as a warm cabinet and nothing else. In practice that makes the first hour measurement — temperatures in both compartments, airflow at the vents, current at the compressor — and it makes anybody who names a part before that hour a guesser.

    Ice builds across the evaporator a little at a time, and for the first two weeks the cabinet hides it by running longer. Then the fresh food side starts creeping up while the freezer still looks perfectly normal, and by the time anyone picks up the phone the coil is a solid block.     The fan behind the freezer wall moves all the cold air in the cabinet, including the air the fresh food side gets. When it stops, the freezer often stays acceptable and the refrigerator warms up, which is why this repair is so often mistaken for a refrigerant problem.     The ice maker is the part of a refrigerator that gets used hardest and understood least. Five cabinet shapes, one very quiet control

Whirlpool's own base covers French door and bottom freezer, side-by-side, top freezer, quad door and the all-refrigerator cabinet with no freezer at all. Between them they account for 568 pages of support material, which is a great deal of writing about doors, shelves, ice, noise and water filters — and very little about error codes. The French door cabinet has 24 code pages, the side-by-side has 9, and the top freezer has none. Compare that with 170 on the range, and the shape of this make becomes obvious.

What that means for a repair

It means the diagnosis is done at the appliance, with instruments, rather than read off a panel. That is not a disadvantage. Refrigeration problems fall into a short list — airflow, defrost, seal, control, sealed system — and they separate cleanly once somebody has taken the temperatures in both compartments and looked behind the back wall of the freezer. Whirlpool refrigerator parts are the easiest in the business to get, because this is the volume brand and the fan motors, thermistors, defrost heaters and gaskets are already on the van. Questions about Whirlpool refrigerators

It is running and it is not cold. Is there a code I should be looking for?

Probably not, and that is the honest answer rather than a shrug. On a top-freezer Whirlpool there is no published code list at all. On a side-by-side there are nine code pages in the whole support base, and most of what they cover is an indicator light rather than a number. What Whirlpool does publish for these cabinets is a flashing F, a PO code after a power outage, and a set of status lights — cooling off, door alarm, air filter, H2O. So the first visit measures: air temperature in each compartment, airflow at the vents, frost on the evaporator, and whether the compressor is running at all.

What actually fails on these in this climate?

Door gaskets first. A cabinet in a Miami kitchen fights wet air every time the door opens, and a seal that has gone hard lets it in all day. The machine then runs longer, ices its own evaporator, and the compartment starts losing ground in a way that looks like a cooling failure and is not. After that: a blocked defrost drain, which puts water under the crisper rather than on the floor where you would see it; the evaporator fan; and the defrost heater. The sealed system is real and it is last, because it is the only one you cannot check without gauges.

The display shows a flashing F, or PO. What are those?

Both are published by Whirlpool for these cabinets. PO is a power outage notice: the control is telling you the machine lost power for long enough to matter, and it wants to be acknowledged and the food checked. A flashing F is the control reporting an error condition rather than naming one, and on a cabinet with a fuller display it will be followed by a two-part code such as F3 E1 or F8 E1. Write down exactly what is on the panel, including whether anything is blinking rather than steady. On this make the blink pattern is often the whole message.
