Whirlpool ice maker has stopped making ice

An ice maker is a small machine with one job and several ways to be interrupted, and Whirlpool publishes 20 pages across ice production, low production and ice quality without a code for any of it. What it does publish is a filter status light — and the note that it does not reset by itself when the filter is changed, which explains a good number of these calls.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Check the dispenser gives water

Water at the door and no ice separates the supply from the ice maker itself in one press.

  2. 02

Look at the size and shape of the last cubes

Small or hollow means the water side. Full-size cubes that stopped abruptly mean something else.

  3. 03

Check the arm or switch position

It is the first thing we ask on the phone and it costs nothing to look at.

  4. 04

    Measure the freezer temperature

If it is above about 10 degrees, deal with the freezer first — the ice maker will follow it back.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Production drops before it stops, so slow small cubes are the early warning”
  • “The H2O filter light does not clear itself after a filter change — it is reset by hand”
  • “The fill tube freezing is the classic version of this in a humid kitchen”
An ordinary kitchen at dusk seen from the doorway, counters clear and cabinets closed, deep blue light coming through the window and no lamp on.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Whirlpool ice maker has stopped making ice

Filter, arm, and the temperature

Three things in order. Check the filter: if it is overdue, or was changed recently and the light is still on, remember that Whirlpool's status light does not reset itself — it has to be reset by hand and a full filter housing is a genuine cause of low production. Check the shut-off arm or the on-off switch, which gets knocked to the off position when somebody reaches past it. Then check the freezer temperature: an ice maker will not cycle properly in a compartment that is not cold enough, so a slow ice maker can be the first sign of a freezer problem rather than an ice problem.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.

  • French door — The ice maker sits in the fresh food door on many of these, which puts a water line through the hinge. A line that has been kinked during a move is a common finding.
  • Side-by-side — Ice maker in the freezer compartment feeding a door dispenser. Cubes fused into a solid block in the bin usually means slow production rather than a broken maker.
  • Freestanding ice maker — A separate appliance with its own service and cleaning lights. Whirlpool publishes pages for both, and in this climate the cleaning interval matters more than the manual suggests.

The filter light that does not reset itself

Whirlpool publishes this and it catches people constantly: the water filter status light on these refrigerators does not clear when a new filter goes in. It is a counter, and it has to be reset by hand. So a household that has changed the filter twice can be looking at a light that has been on for a year, assuming the machine is complaining about something else. Resetting it costs nothing and removes one item from the list before anybody looks inside.

What we do differently on a coast

Ice production is the first thing to suffer when a condenser is struggling, which makes a slow ice maker a useful early warning in a climate this hard on coils. On a coastal property we will look at the condenser and the ambient conditions as part of an ice call rather than treating the ice maker in isolation, because the appliance that makes less ice in July is often the one that stops cooling properly in August.

Questions about Whirlpool ice maker has stopped making ice

It makes some ice, just not enough.

That is usually the water side rather than the ice maker — a restricted filter, a partly open valve, or a supply line that has been kinked. Small or hollow cubes point the same way.

The ice tastes stale.

Old ice absorbs everything in a freezer, so a bin that turns over slowly tastes worse regardless of the machine. Empty the bin, let it refill, and change the filter if it is due — that resolves most of these without a visit.
