The over-the-range machine has 135 pages with 67 code pages and the countertop has 66 with 9 — 76 code pages in total, which is more than the whole refrigeration branch manages. And the codes carry real meanings rather than numbers: Whirlpool's own pages say that E21 is the thermal sensor circuit reporting open to the control board, that E23 means the oven did not reach preheat temperature within thirty minutes, that F2H1 and F2H2 point at the vent fan and light switch on the lower left front side panel, and that F3C points at the cavity temperature thermistor.

    Microwave runs but does not heat

    A microwave that lights, turns and counts down while heating nothing has a high-voltage problem, and this is the one appliance on this site where we would rather you did not open anything at all. Whirlpool's own code table for these is deep — 226 code pages across its microwave branch — and several of the codes point at exactly this.

    Microwave buttons do not respond

    Whirlpool separates the touchpad from the board behind it in its own code table, and that is the distinction that matters here. Its wording for F2 is that the keypad reported a problem to the control board, and for F2 E1 that there may be a problem with the user interface or keypad or the associated wiring. A lit display with a dead keypad is a specific finding, not a general failure.

    Range hood is not clearing the smoke

    Whirlpool's ventilation branch publishes pages titled Fan Not Working, Lights Not Working, Nothing Works and Not Removing Smoke or Odor — and not one error code anywhere in it. A hood is a motor, a filter and a duct. Nothing measures itself and nothing reports, so this diagnosis is made with a hand, a light and a look at the roof line.

    A microwave that runs but does not heat is nearly always the high-voltage circuit, and it is the one appliance in this list that stores enough energy to be dangerous long after it is unplugged. Whirlpool publishes 67 code pages for its over-the-range machines and nine for its countertop ones, so on this make there is usually a reading to start from.

    The ventilation half of these machines is the half nobody thinks about until a pan of oil fills the kitchen with smoke. In South Florida condominiums a great many of them were never ducted outside at all: they push the air back into the room through a charcoal filter, and once that filter is saturated the machine is doing precisely nothing for the room. Which arrangement you have decides what maintenance even means here.

Better documented than the refrigerator, by a wide margin

Two hundred and Seventy-six code pages across the two microwave types this make still supports is one of the clearest illustrations of how this make thinks. Whirlpool documents heavily where it cooks and barely where it chills, and the microwave sits firmly on the cooking side. The over-the-range machine alone has 67 code pages against 24 for the French door refrigerator.

What we will and will not do with it

Some microwave repairs are entirely sensible. A vent fan switch, a door interlock, a touchpad, a turntable motor, a cavity thermistor and a control board are all real parts with real prices, and on a built-in or over-the-range machine that is trimmed into the cabinetry the repair is far cheaper than the replacement, which usually brings a carpenter with it. A countertop machine with a failed magnetron is a different conversation and we will have it plainly rather than quote you a repair worth more than the machine. What is never a wait-and-see is a door interlock: a microwave that can run with its door unlatched gets unplugged today, not next week. And any machine that has shown Whirlpool's documented overheat condition stops being used until it has been checked. OEM parts are ordered against the model number, and exact cost is confirmed after the on-site diagnostic.

Before you book

Questions about Whirlpool microwaves

It runs, the plate turns, the light is on, and nothing gets hot.

That combination is specific and it means the control and the motors are fine while the high-voltage side is not. In practice that is the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor, or the transformer. There is one thing to understand before anyone opens the case: the capacitor in a microwave stores a lethal charge and holds it after the machine is unplugged. This is the one appliance in the house we ask people not to open. Unplug it, and let somebody with a discharge tool take the cover off.

What do the E codes on my over-the-range microwave mean?

Whirlpool publishes them individually and its own wording is specific. E03 is the keypad reporting a problem to the control board. E11 and E12 concern the gas sensor and its wiring. E21 is the thermal sensor circuit reporting open and E22 is the same circuit reporting a short. E23 means the oven did not reach preheat temperature within thirty minutes. E24 is an overheat condition of 500F. E61, E62 and E63 report the oven sensor circuit open or shorted. The published first step on nearly all of them is to power the unit down at the breaker for one minute and back up, and see whether it returns — which is worth doing before anything else. E24 is the exception: stop using the machine and have it looked at.

The vent fan or the light on the over-the-range unit has stopped.

Those are published conditions with a named part behind them. Whirlpool's own text for F2H1 and F2H2 points at the vent fan and light switch located on the lower left front side panel, and for F2E1 and F2Q1 at the user interface or touchpad. That is unusually specific for a microwave and it makes the visit short. It also matters more than it sounds, because on these installations the microwave is the kitchen's ventilation, and a dead vent fan means a hood that is not working as much as it means a microwave that is not.
