Not one of those 155 pages is a code page. There is no error code list for a Whirlpool freezer, because there is nothing on the front of most of them to display one. About Whirlpool freezers
A product family with no error codes at all
Whirlpool publishes 155 pages about its standalone freezers and zero of them are error code pages. That is worth stating plainly, because a site that implied otherwise would be selling you a diagnosis that does not exist. The upright freezer, the chest freezer and the convertible chest freezer all report in the oldest way there is: temperature, frost, noise and running time.
The four things that actually fail
Door or lid seal, first and most often, because South Florida air is wet for nine months and a hardened gasket admits it all day long. Then the temperature control or thermistor, which shows up as a cabinet that runs constantly or one that never runs. Then the defrost circuit on the frost-free uprights, which ices the evaporator until the air stops moving. Then the sealed system, which is genuinely last and is measured rather than guessed at. Garage installations deserve their own note: a freezer in an unconditioned garage in August is working at the edge of its design, and a good deal of what gets called a failure there is a machine doing its best. Before you book
Questions about Whirlpool freezers
There is no display and no code. How does anyone diagnose it?
By the same route Whirlpool's own pages take, which is behavior. Is the compressor running, and does it stop and start on a normal cycle. Is there frost, and is it on the walls or only on the packages. Does the door close against its seal all the way around, or does a corner stand off. Is the cabinet in a garage where the ambient temperature swings twenty degrees in a day, because a freezer with a mechanical thermostat behaves badly in a hot garage and that is not a failure. Those four checks separate a control problem from an air problem from a sealed-system problem before any tool comes out.
The chest freezer has frost on the walls. Is that normal?
Some of it is. Most chest freezers are manual-defrost, so frost building slowly is the design and clearing it is maintenance rather than repair — Whirlpool devotes eight pages to how. Frost that returns within days is different, and it means wet air is getting in continuously: a lid seal that has hardened, a hinge that has dropped, or a lid held open by a full basket. In this climate the seal is the usual answer, and it is a part rather than a machine.
How long is the food safe if it stops?
About forty-eight hours in a full freezer with the lid or door kept shut, and about half that in one that is half empty, because a full cabinet is its own cold store. The most useful thing you can do while waiting is not open it. The second is to note whether the compressor is running, silent, or short-cycling — starting and stopping every few minutes. A machine that short-cycles and one that never starts are two different repairs, and telling us which one it is before we arrive puts the right part on the van.
