The routine that fixes most of these
Peel the door seal back all the way around and wipe the underside of the lip with a cloth and hot soapy water; expect it to come out gray. Pull the dispenser drawer out and wash it in the sink, including the housing it slides into. Run the Clean Washer cycle with the tub cleaner the machine asks for, empty, with nothing in the drum. Then change one habit: leave the door and the dispenser drawer open between loads, and move wet laundry out as soon as it finishes. In this climate that last one matters more than the cleaning does.
What it usually means, by the kind of machine
Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.
- Front load — The door seal is a folded rubber boot with a lip that holds water. Peel it back and look underneath — that is where the smell is, and it is where the fix is.
- Top-load HE — No boot, but the low water use means detergent residue is not always rinsed away. The smell here tends to come from the outer tub rather than the door.
- All-in-one washer dryer — Runs a drying stage in the same drum, which helps, but the condensing path has its own trap that needs the maintenance cycle as much as any washer.
Why this is a South Florida page and not a general one
The advice printed with every front-load washer assumes the machine gets a chance to dry. That assumption holds in a dry climate and it does not hold in a laundry closet in Miami-Dade in August, where the air going into the machine is already carrying most of the moisture it can hold. Add a door that gets closed for the look of the hallway and a load that sits in the drum until the evening, and the machine spends its life wet. We see this on newer washers more than on old ones, because the newer ones use less water and rinse less of the residue away.

It helps in the drum and it does nothing under the door seal, which is where the smell usually lives. Use the tub-cleaning routine the machine offers and clean the boot by hand — that combination works far better than either alone.
