Whirlpool washer drain pump replacement

The drain pump is the single most replaced part in Whirlpool laundry, and about half the time it did not need replacing at all. This make publishes a drain error, a long-drain code and its own page on cleaning the drain pump filter, and on a front loader that filter is behind a little door at the bottom right that most owners have never opened. What comes out of it is coins, hair clips and lint felted into a plug.

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Open the drain pump filter first

It costs nothing, it takes a tray and ten minutes, and it resolves a real share of these before any part is quoted.

  2. 02

Read the code the machine gave you

Whirlpool documents drain-related codes separately from long-cycle codes on both its top and front loaders. Which one appeared narrows this considerably.

  3. 03

Check the hose and the standpipe

A kinked hose behind the machine and a building standpipe that backs up produce identical symptoms to a dead pump, and neither is fixed by a pump.

  4. 04

    Test the pump properly

Resistance, current and the impeller turned by hand. Jammed is more common than burned out, and a jammed pump often survives being cleared.

  5. 05

Fit and test on a full load

Drained under real weight, with the hose routed so it cannot kink again when the machine is pushed back.

    Whirlpool washer repair in Miami

Laundry is the strongest part of this site, and the reason is measurable: Whirlpool's own support base carries 1,449 laundry pages, while the sister badge on the same control platforms publishes no laundry at all. For washers specifically there are 157 pages on the top loader with 68 code pages, 179 on the front loader with 59, 60 on the compact front loader, 204 on the laundry tower with 88, and a separate all-in-one washer dryer branch with 22 code pages of its own. That is five distinct machines with five distinct code lists, and the codes do not all carry the same meaning across them. Which machine the code came off is half the diagnosis.

    • Top load, front load, compact front load, laundry tower and all-in-one machines
    • Around 250 published washer code pages, and the code lists differ between shapes
    • Sud, F8E1, F5E2, LF, Ld, dU, uL and the lid-lock lights are all published conditions

About Whirlpool washer drain pump replacement

What comes out of the filter before a pump is condemned

On a front loader there is a little door at the bottom right and behind it a filter most owners have never opened. What comes out is coins, hair clips, an underwire and lint felted into a plug that water cannot get past. Clearing it fixes a real share of these calls outright. A top loader has no such door, which is why the same coin ends up in the impeller instead and the pump does genuinely need to come out. Either way the pump is a stocked part on this make, so this is usually one visit rather than two.

Questions about Whirlpool washer drain pump replacement

How do I empty the machine before you arrive?

On a front loader, put a shallow tray and towels under that little door, pull the short hose out and let it drain in stages — there is more water in there than the tray holds. On a top loader, bail it out from inside the drum.

It drains but takes forever. Same repair?

Usually a partial restriction rather than a dead pump, and it is worth acting on: this make reports a slow drain as a distinct condition from no drain, and the slow one is the cheaper visit.

How do I stop this happening again?

Open the filter every few months on a front loader and check pockets before they go in. Coins and hair clips are the two things we take out of these more than anything else, and both arrive in the drum rather than in the machine.
