Symptom

Whirlpool oven will not heat

On a Whirlpool range the cooktop and the oven are close to independent, which is why burners that work perfectly tell you nothing about an oven that does not. This maker publishes more code pages for ranges and wall ovens than for anything else it builds, so an oven that will not heat and shows a code has already narrowed the job before anybody arrives.

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Write the code down before cutting power

The display clears at the breaker and the condition does not. This one sentence saves a return visit more often than anything else on the page.

  2. 02

    Try bake and broil separately

One working and the other not points straight at an element rather than at the supply or the control.

  3. 03

    Watch a gas oven light

Glow with no flame is the igniter. No glow at all is electrical. Say which you saw when you book.

  4. 04

Check the clock and the light

A live panel with a dead oven is the classic half-supply picture on an electric range.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Working burners do not mean the oven has power — an electric oven needs both supply legs”
  • “Whirlpool documents a demo mode for its ranges and wall ovens, and it disables heating on purpose”
  • “A gas oven that clicks and never lights is a different repair from one that never clicks”
A torch standing upright on end on a dark counter throwing a circle of light up onto the wall behind it, the rest of the room black.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Whirlpool oven will not heat

Read the display, then check the supply

Write down whatever is on the display, including a code that looks like nonsense — Whirlpool uses four-character codes on these controls, and 1c1c or 9d61 is a real entry in its table rather than a glitch. Then look for a demo or showroom setting: the maker publishes a demo mode page for both ranges and wall ovens, and in that mode the panel behaves normally and the oven does not heat. Last, on an electric range or wall oven, switch the double breaker fully off and on. Half a supply runs the clock and the light and heats nothing.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.

  • Freestanding range — Gas cooktop with an electric oven is a common Whirlpool combination, and on those the burners lighting proves nothing about the oven at all.
  • Wall oven — No cooktop to compare against, so the whole diagnosis is the oven. Whirlpool publishes 176 code pages for this branch, and the display is worth reading carefully before the breaker is touched.
  • Combination wall oven — An oven and a microwave in one cabinet sharing a control. A microwave-side message can appear while the oven is the half that is not working, so note which cavity is affected.

The one make where the code table earns its place

Whirlpool goes quiet when it chills and talks when it cooks. Its refrigerators publish almost nothing; its ranges and wall ovens publish hundreds of code pages, including a set of four-character codes — 1c1c, 3d11, 4d41, 9d61 — that look like typing errors and are real published entries. If your oven is showing one of those, it is worth writing down exactly as it appears, character for character, because the difference between 1c31 and 1c32 is a different page in the maker's own table.

Ordinary machine, ordinary parts

The advantage of the volume badge shows up on this repair. Bake elements, broil elements, oven sensors and igniters for Whirlpool ranges are stocked items, so an oven diagnosed in the morning is usually an oven working the same day. That is not true of every make on this fleet, and it is a fair reason to own the most common range in the state.

Questions about Whirlpool oven will not heat

The burners work fine, so it cannot be the power.

On a gas cooktop with an electric oven, the burners prove only that the gas and the ignition work. The oven can be on a completely dead circuit while every burner lights normally.

It heats but takes far too long.

That is a different page and a different repair. A weak element, a partly failed igniter or a door seal that no longer holds heat all show up as an oven that gets there eventually, and each is worth checking separately.
