Symptom
Whirlpool dryer takes two cycles to dry one load
This is the most common dryer call we take, and Whirlpool has a code for it that is unusually blunt. AF, printed on some machines as Check Vent, is restricted air flow, and the maker's own wording names a clogged lint screen or vent. A dryer does not dry clothes with heat. It dries them by moving hot air through them and taking the moisture out of the room.

Run the water test on the lint screen
Water through it means it is clear. Water sitting on it means the screen is part of the problem.

Feel the exhaust outside while it runs
Strong warm air at the outside flap means the path is open. A weak trickle means it is not, whatever the duct looks like.

Measure the duct run
Count the elbows and the length. Every elbow costs the equivalent of several feet of straight duct, and closet installations are usually over the limit.

A laundry closet that becomes a sauna while the dryer runs is a dryer venting into the room rather than outside.

Clean the whole path, not just the screen
Take the lint screen out and hold it under a running tap. If the water sits on top instead of running through, there is a film of fabric softener across it and the screen is restricting air even though it looks clean. Wash it with a brush and let it dry. Then pull the machine out and look at the duct behind it: flexible foil crushed into an S-bend behind a dryer pushed back into a closet is the single most common restriction we find. Finally, go outside and check the flap actually opens when the dryer runs. It often does not.
What it usually means, by the kind of machine
Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.
- Electric — Dries by heating air over an element and moving it through the drum. When the air cannot leave, the cycle keeps running and the clothes stay damp.
- Gas — Same air path, different heat source. A gas dryer with a restricted vent can also short-cycle its own burner, so the drum is hot and then not hot.
- Compact heat pump — Vents nothing outside and pulls water into a tank instead. Here the equivalent restriction is a full water tank, a blocked bottom filter or a condenser that needs cleaning, and Whirlpool documents each.
Where this goes wrong in South Florida
Two local habits make dryer venting worse here than the design allows for. The first is the laundry closet: a stacked pair or a dryer in a hallway alcove, ducted through the ceiling or around two corners to an outside wall, with flexible foil that gets crushed every time the machine is pushed back. The second is the humidity. A dryer takes several pounds of water out of a load and has to put it somewhere; on a day when the outside air is already saturated, a marginal vent stops coping entirely. The same machine that was fine in February needs two cycles in August, and nothing about it has changed except the air.
Why we look at the vent before the dryer
Whirlpool names the vent first on its own AF page, and we follow that order for two reasons. It is the most common cause by a distance, and it is the one that matters for safety: lint packed in a duct behind a running heater is how laundry fires start. A vent clean is cheap next to an element or a control board, and if the machine still cannot dry after the path is clear, we have removed the biggest variable before spending anything.

That is the pattern of a duct filling with lint rather than a part failing. Parts tend to fail on a particular day; restriction builds slowly and the cycles get a little longer each month until somebody notices.
The clothes are hot but still wet.
That points at air rather than heat. The dryer is making heat and not moving it through the load and out of the house, which is exactly what a restricted vent does. Check the outside flap before anything else.
Is it safe to keep using it?
If the machine is showing Check Vent or the outside flap barely moves, treat it as something to deal with this week rather than this month. Lint is fuel, and a restricted duct keeps it against a heat source.
