Symptom

Whirlpool electric cooktop element will not heat

Whirlpool publishes 83 code pages for its electric cooktops, which is more than it publishes for its entire refrigeration range. So an electric cooktop with a display and a dead zone will often name the problem, and F6 E0 — a loss of communication between the keypad and the user interface control, in the maker's own words — is one of the ones worth knowing.

  • From $89 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • 59 cities and neighborhoods covered
  • OEM parts available on order

Five ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Map every zone

Which are dead, which are weak, which are normal. The pattern is most of the diagnosis and it takes five minutes.

  2. 02

    Cycle the double breaker fully

Off, pause, on. It settles the supply question and it is free.

  3. 03

Write the code down before that

The display clears at the breaker. This is the mistake that costs a second visit, on every make.

  4. 04

Look at the glass under a light

A hairline crack across a zone is easy to miss and it changes the whole conversation.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “83 code pages for electric cooktops against zero for gas — this half of the branch does talk”
  • “F6 E0 is Whirlpool's loss of communication between the keypad and its control”
  • “A hot surface indicator that never goes out is a sensor report, not a hot cooktop”
A run of four closed machine doors along one dark wall of a kitchen at night, all flush, all unlit, seen square on from a little way back.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Whirlpool electric cooktop element will not heat

Establish the pattern first

Work through every zone at a low setting and write down which ones heat and which do not. One dead zone with the others healthy is that zone's element or its switching. Two adjacent zones dead together often share a relay or a supply leg. Everything dead with a live display is a supply problem rather than a cooktop problem — an electric cooktop needs both legs of its double breaker, and losing one leaves the panel lit and the glass cold. And note any code exactly as it appears before touching the breaker.

What it usually means, by the kind of machine

Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.

  • Radiant glass — Elements under a ceramic surface, switched by the control. A single dead zone with the others working is usually the element or its relay rather than the control.
  • Coil element — The old and very serviceable design. A dead coil is usually the element or the receptacle it plugs into, and both are ordinary parts.
  • Electric range cooktop — Shares a control with the oven below. If the oven has a code too, treat it as one problem rather than two.

Why the electric side talks and the gas side does not

The same maker, the same kitchen, and two completely different diagnostic experiences. An electric or induction cooktop is governed by a control that switches power and reads temperature, so it has something to report and Whirlpool publishes 83 and 40 code pages respectively. A gas burner is a valve, a spark and a flame; there is nothing electronic supervising it and the maker publishes no codes at all. Knowing which of those you own tells you, before anything else, whether the machine is going to help with the diagnosis.

What we bring to a cooktop call

Radiant elements, coil elements and receptacles for Whirlpool cooktops are stocked parts. What we will not do is replace a control board on the strength of one dead zone: the element, the relay and the supply are all read first, because the board is the expensive answer and it is the wrong one most of the time.

Before you book

Questions about Whirlpool electric cooktop element will not heat

The zone works sometimes.

Intermittent is usually a connection rather than a failed element — a receptacle on a coil cooktop, a terminal on a radiant one. It is worth booking rather than living with, because a loose connection under load gets hot.

The hot surface light never goes out.

That is the sensor reporting rather than the glass being hot. It is a real repair, and in the meantime the light being wrong makes it harder to tell when the cooktop genuinely is hot.
