The model number decides whether there is a belt, a coupling, or a rotor bolted to the tub shaft.

A hum with no rotation, a rotation in one direction only, or agitation with no spin each point somewhere different.

Test the actuator on a top loader
A shift actuator that has stopped moving gives you a machine that washes and will not spin, and it is a fraction of the cost of the drive it gets mistaken for.

Measure the motor and its control
Windings, the control output, and the harness between them. A motor is rarely condemned on behavior alone.

Check what the drive was fighting
A seized bearing or a jammed drum will kill a new motor as fast as the old one, so the drum is turned by hand before anything is ordered.

The small part that imitates the expensive one
On a direct-drive top loader there is an actuator the size of a matchbox that decides whether the drum agitates or spins, and when it fails the machine does neither. It presents as a dead motor and it is nothing of the kind. Establishing which of the two Whirlpool drive arrangements is in the room comes first for exactly that reason: a belted front loader with a motor and its own control fails and costs quite differently. The motor and the control are tested separately, because replacing them as a pair on a guess is the most expensive mistake available here.
