Whirlpool condenser cleaning service

Nothing on a Whirlpool will ever tell you the coil is blocked. This make publishes a cleaning-the-condenser page for its top-freezer refrigerators and not one code page for them, so the condition is invisible until the compressor is running almost continuously and the ice cream starts going soft. The machines that need this most are the ordinary ones — the top-freezer in a rental condominium that has not been pulled away from the wall since the day it was delivered.

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Find where this cabinet keeps its coil

Whirlpool puts it behind a toe grille on some models and across the back on others, and a rental machine has usually never been moved far enough forward to reach either.

  2. 02

Take the dust out instead of moving it around

Brush and vacuum working together, through the fins rather than across the face of them. Compressed air on its own puts the mat on the kitchen floor and back on the coil by evening.

  3. 03

Test the condenser fan and its shroud

A blade felted with dust turns slowly and unbalanced long before it stops, and a slow fan produces exactly the warm cabinet a blocked coil does. This make gives you no reading for either one.

  4. 04

Empty and disinfect the drain pan

It sits over the compressor, it stays warm and wet all year in this climate, and it is the only time anybody is going to see it.

  5. 05

    Leave a run-time figure behind

Compressor run time and both compartment temperatures, written on the paperwork, so the next visit has a baseline instead of an impression.

    Whirlpool refrigerator repair in Miami

This is the most common refrigerator in South Florida and the least documented appliance Whirlpool sells. Its own support base carries 156 pages on French door cabinets and 140 on side-by-side, but only 24 and 9 of those are code pages, and on the top-freezer cabinet — 82 pages — there are none at all. That is not an oversight in our research. It is how the make works: Whirlpool talks when it cooks and washes, and it goes quiet when it chills. So a refrigerator call here starts with measurement rather than with a display. Temperatures in both compartments, air at the vents, the state of the defrost circuit, and the door seal that this climate takes apart faster than any other part of the machine.

    • French door, side-by-side, top freezer, quad door and all-refrigerator cabinets
    • 24 code pages on French door, 9 on side-by-side, none on top freezer
    • Indicator lights do most of the reporting: cooling off, door alarm, air filter, H2O

  • "A tall single-door upright freezer standing against the wall of a utility room with its door open" — the standalone upright, which is what this make's freezer branch actually is

    Whirlpool freezer repair in Miami

Whirlpool sells standalone freezers as its own product family and publishes 63 pages on the upright, 46 on the chest and 46 on the convertible chest freezer that can be switched to refrigeration. Not one of those 155 pages is a code page. There is no error code list for a Whirlpool freezer, because there is nothing on the front of most of them to display one. What Whirlpool writes about instead is exactly what goes wrong: 25 pages on operation, 11 on noise, 8 on cleaning, 5 on frost, 5 on doors and 3 on leaking. That is the real service list for this appliance, and it is the list we work through.

    • Upright, chest, and convertible chest freezers that switch to refrigeration
    • Zero code pages across 155 freezer pages — this machine reports by behavior
    • Frost, door seal, temperature control and the defrost drain are the whole short list
    Freezer repair
  • "A deep narrow white plastic ice storage bin ... lifted out and standing on a dark kitchen counter, with the empty ice compartment" — this make's ice maker lives inside the refrigerator, so the bin is the honest subject and not an undercounter bar machine
The ice maker inside the refrigerator, and the freestanding ice maker as its own machine

Whirlpool ice maker repair in Miami

Whirlpool treats ice as its own branch, with 110 pages under ice makers and a further set inside the refrigerator sections — 17 pages on ice concerns for the top-freezer cabinet alone. The split of that writing tells you what breaks: 14 pages on ice production, 13 on cleaning and maintenance, 10 on ice quality, 20 on operation and power, 7 on noise and 4 on leaking. There are four blinking-light pages for the freestanding machine — the cleaning light, the filter light and the service light — and no numbered code list anywhere. This is the appliance people call about most in a Miami summer, and it is the one the make explains with words rather than codes.

    • The refrigerator's built-in ice maker, and Whirlpool's freestanding ice makers
    • No numbered codes: three published indicator lights and 110 pages of plain guidance
    • Ice production, ice quality and cleaning are where Whirlpool's own writing concentrates

About Whirlpool condenser cleaning service

The most ordinary machines are the ones that need this

The cabinet that has never once been pulled away from the wall is the top-freezer in a rented condominium, and it is exactly the machine Whirlpool sells most of. Dust, pet hair and the carpet fibers that gather under a toe grille sit on the coil as insulation, so the compressor runs longer, then almost continuously, then the freezer starts softening while nothing appears to be broken. Nothing on the machine will ever say so. The visit clears it, measures the compartment temperatures and the run time, and leaves both numbers behind so next year has something to compare with.

Questions about Whirlpool condenser cleaning service

How do I know when it needs doing rather than guessing?

Put a hand near the grille at the bottom or the coil at the back while it is running. Warm is correct. Barely warm on a machine that never seems to stop is the sign, and so is a compressor you can hear from another room in a condominium where you never used to.

Does this actually save money or is it maintenance for its own sake?

It is one of the few jobs on this list where the saving is measurable on the visit itself. A cleared coil pulls the run time down the same afternoon, and a compressor that is not running continuously in a Miami summer lasts appreciably longer.

Can I do this myself with a vacuum?

On a top-freezer with a toe grille you can reach the front of the coil, and that is worth doing. What a vacuum will not reach is the fan blade and the back of the condenser, which is where the insulating layer actually sits on a cabinet in this climate.
