Whirlpool cooktops

The three kinds of Whirlpool cooktop are documented completely differently, and the gap is the most useful thing to know before you call anyone. The electric radiant cooktop has 114 pages with 83 code pages. The induction cooktop has 64 pages with 40. The gas cooktop has 52 pages and zero code pages — not a short list, none at all. Its pages are about surface burners, flame problems, ignition, venting and cleaning, because a gas cooktop has almost no electronics to report anything. So on a gas cooktop the diagnosis is done at the burner, and on the electric and induction ones it usually starts at the display.

    Whirlpool's gas cooktop branch is the one place in its whole support base where there is not a single code page. Fifty-two pages about gas cooktops and no error codes at all, because these burners are not electronically supervised the way an oven is. The machine will not tell you anything here. Everything on this page is looked at rather than read.

    Whirlpool publishes 83 code pages for its electric cooktops, which is more than it publishes for its entire refrigeration range. So an electric cooktop with a display and a dead zone will often name the problem, and F6 E0 — a loss of communication between the keypad and the user interface control, in the maker's own words — is one of the ones worth knowing.

    Induction cooktop will not recognize the pan

    Induction heats the pan, not the surface, so a pan the cooktop cannot work with is not a problem the cooktop can solve. Whirlpool publishes this as U u, and its wording is specific: the symbol appears if the pot is not suitable for induction cooking, is not positioned correctly, or is not the right size for the zone selected. If no pot is detected within thirty seconds, the zone switches off.

    Nothing on this list saves an owner more money and nothing is booked less often. Whirlpool builds appliances that will run for fifteen years in an ordinary house, and what usually ends them early is a maintenance item rather than a design one: a coil under a blanket of dust, a drain pump filter that has never once been opened, a duct that has closed a little further every year.     Appliance installation

    Most installations on this make are replacements, and that is worth saying out loud. The owner has just weighed a two-hundred-dollar repair against a nine-hundred-dollar machine and chosen the machine. What decides whether the new one is still working in eight years is the hour after it arrives: whether the opening was measured, whether the duct behind it was cleared, whether anyone put a level on it.     The board is where a Whirlpool reports from, and it is also the part that gets blamed for everything else. Whirlpool runs the same control architecture across its whole line, which is why an F#E# code looks familiar on a range and on a washer — but a board that has died usually died of something, and replacing it without finding that something buys you a few months.

    Gas burner and igniter repair

    A gas burner that clicks endlessly, lights slowly or will not light at all is one of the few Whirlpool cooking problems the machine will not name for you. This is worth stating plainly: Whirlpool publishes 52 support pages for its gas cooktops and not a single code page among them. There is no reading to look up here. It is done with eyes, a meter and a manometer.

    A radiant element that has stopped, or that runs at one heat regardless of the setting, is usually the element or the switch behind it, and on this make there is a very good chance the cooktop has already said which. It is also the cooking appliance most often reported broken when it is not, because a pan that is not ferrous or a pan too small for the zone produces exactly the behavior of a failure. Whirlpool publishes 40 code pages for these, including readings for overheating and for cookware problems.

About Whirlpool cooktops

Three appliances under one word

A radiant electric cooktop heats a coil under ceramic glass. An induction cooktop puts a magnetic field into the pan itself and heats nothing else. A gas cooktop burns gas under an open grate. They share a countertop cutout and very little else, and Whirlpool's own documentation reflects that: 123 code pages across the two electric types, and none at all for gas.

What the codes are worth, and what they are not

On the electric radiant cooktop the codes are genuinely diagnostic, and the FC position codes are the best example — a control that names the left front element has done half the work already. On the induction cooktop it is more mixed. Whirlpool publishes forty code pages, but the remedy printed on most of them is to disconnect the cooktop from the power supply, wait a few seconds, reconnect it, and if the problem persists, call service and quote the code that appears on the display. That is honest documentation rather than a diagnosis, and we treat it that way: the code tells us which board is complaining, and the measurement tells us why. Induction generators, radiant elements and glass tops are all available as OEM parts against the model number, and a cracked glass top is the one repair we will always quote before doing, because it is the expensive part on this appliance. Questions about Whirlpool cooktops

My induction cooktop shows U or a U-shaped symbol and switches the zone off.

That one Whirlpool explains in its own words, and it is not a failure. The symbol appears if the pot is not suitable for induction cooking, is not positioned correctly, or is not an appropriate size for the cooking zone selected — and if no pot is detected within thirty seconds of making the selection, the zone switches itself off. Test the pan with a magnet: if a fridge magnet does not stick firmly to the base, induction cannot heat it. Centering the pan and matching it to the zone diameter solves most of the rest.

One element on the electric cooktop stopped working.

Whirlpool publishes codes here that most makes do not, and they are unusually helpful: FC LF, FC RF, FC LR and FC RR name the element by where it sits — left front, right front, left rear, right rear. If your control shows one of those, you already know which circuit is being reported. Behind the glass, a single dead element is normally the radiant element itself, its switch, or a connector that has cooked at the terminal block. A cooktop where everything is dead is supply or control instead, and one where half is dead is often one leg of the 240-volt feed.

The gas cooktop clicks and clicks after a spill.

That is the most common gas cooktop call and there is no code to look up, because this appliance publishes none. A spark switch that got wet keeps firing until it dries, and clicking on all burners at once after a boil-over is usually exactly that. Turn everything off, dry the burner caps and heads thoroughly, take them off and let the area under them dry, and give it a few hours. If it is still clicking a day later with everything dry, the spark module or a switch has failed and it is a part rather than patience.
