- “Whirlpool publishes almost no refrigerator codes, and does not publish meanings for the F codes it does show”
- “PO is one of the few real messages: the power was off long enough to matter”
- “A condenser in a Miami garage is doing a much harder job than the design assumed”
Symptom
Whirlpool refrigerator is not cooling
This is where Whirlpool goes quiet. Its top-freezer branch publishes 82 pages and not one error code; its side-by-side branch publishes 140 pages and nine. Where an F code does appear on a refrigerator, the maker publishes the fact that an F is flashing and, on the pages behind it, does not publish what each one means. So this diagnosis is measured, not read.

Six ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Cooling switched off at the panel
A real setting on these machines, and the display says so. Free to reverse and worth ruling out first.
Diagnostic visit from $89 -
A condenser packed with dust or corroded
The coil that sheds heat cannot shed it. In a garage in August, or within sight of the water, this is the first suspect twice over.
Condenser cleaning service from $115 -
The defrost circuit
A heater or sensor that has stopped clearing the evaporator seals the airway in ice over weeks. The freezer holds and the fresh food side drifts.
Defrost system repair from $165 -
The evaporator fan
Cold is made and not delivered. A freezer you can hear running with a warm fridge above it belongs here.
Refrigerator not cooling repair from $145 -
Door seals in a humid house
Nine wet months a year is hard on a gasket, and a cabinet fighting its own door runs constantly and still loses.
Refrigerator door seal replacement from $135 -
The sealed system
Real, uncommon and last on the list. Pressures get read with gauges before it is named, and anybody quoting a compressor before measuring has skipped several cheaper steps.

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

01
Read both compartments with a thermometer
A middle shelf in each, several hours apart. Not a hand, and not the panel reading.
-
02
Look for COOLING OFF or PO on the display
These are two of the very few things a Whirlpool refrigerator actually says, and both are worth acting on.
-
03
Pull the grille and look at the coil
Dust, pet hair or corrosion. This is where a South Florida refrigerator differs from one anywhere else.
-
04
Check the vents inside are not blocked
A freezer loaded solid against its rear vents cannot pass air down to the compartment below. Moving the food is the whole repair.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About Whirlpool refrigerator is not cooling
Two free checks before anybody is called
Check whether cooling has been switched off. Whirlpool's own wording is that the refrigerator and freezer will not cool while cooling is turned off, and the display says COOLING OFF — it gets set by accident more often than anyone expects. Then put a thermometer on a middle shelf in each compartment and read them after a few hours. Which one is warm, and by how much, is the single most useful piece of information about this appliance, and it is the thing the machine itself will not tell you.
What it usually means, by the kind of machine
Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.
- French door — One evaporator behind the freezer feeds both compartments through a damper. A warm fresh food side with a hard freezer is an airflow question rather than a cooling one.
- Side-by-side — A tall narrow pair of compartments with a long air path. This is the layout where a frosted evaporator shows up as a fresh food side that will not hold.
- Top freezer — The simplest of the three and the one Whirlpool publishes no codes for at all. One evaporator, one fan, one defrost circuit — and everything is decided with a thermometer.
Saying plainly that the machine will not help
Every other family on this site gets a code table. Refrigeration does not, and pretending otherwise would be the easiest lie on the whole site to tell. Whirlpool's own base publishes 82 top-freezer pages with zero code pages, and even on the full-size models where a flashing F appears, the pages behind it do not say what each one means. So a refrigerator diagnosis here is made the old way: two thermometers, a look at the coil, the airflow read at the vents, and the sealed system measured with gauges if everything cheaper has been ruled out.
Why this climate changes the order
A refrigerator rejects heat into the room it stands in. In a kitchen at 78 degrees with the door opening twenty times an evening, that is already harder than the rating assumed; in a garage in August it is a different appliance entirely, and we see garage refrigerators in Broward and Palm Beach fail in ways that the same model in a kitchen never does. Add salt air on a coil within a few blocks of the water and the condenser goes from a maintenance item to the leading suspect.

Questions about Whirlpool refrigerator is not cooling
How long before the food is a problem?
Judge it by temperature rather than by hours. Above about 40 degrees in the fresh food compartment, treat it as today's problem and move what matters into a cooler. A freezer holding below about 10 degrees still has time.
The freezer is fine and the fridge is warm.
That is a useful split and it usually means cold is being made and not delivered — the damper, the fan, or an evaporator sealed in ice. It points away from the compressor, which is the expensive answer.
It runs constantly and never gets cold.
Either the heat is not leaving at the condenser or the cold is not reaching the cabinet. Both are checked before anything is said about the sealed system, and both are cheaper.
