# Whirlpool water on the floor under the refrigerator

### Find out whether the water is clean

Wipe the floor and put a paper towel down where the puddle forms, then look at where it reappears. Clean water at the front of the machine points at the dispenser line, the filter housing or the ice maker. Water at the back, or ice building up under the bottom drawer, points at the defrost drain. Water that is only there in the mornings, or only in wet weather, is very likely condensation from a door that is not sealing, which is a common thing in a South Florida kitchen and not a plumbing problem at all.

### What it usually means, by the kind of machine

Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.

- **French door** — The drain from the freezer runs under the compartment to a pan by the compressor. Ice under the bottom drawer is the classic sign that it is blocked.
- **Side-by-side** — Usually has an ice maker and a dispenser in the door, which adds a water line running through the hinge area. That line is a common source of clean water at the front.
- **Top freezer** — The simplest layout and the drain is usually easy to reach. It is also the one most likely to be pushed hard against a wall, which crushes the line at the back.

### Humidity turns a small defect into a puddle

Elsewhere, a door seal that has gone slightly soft costs a little efficiency and nobody notices for years. Here, the air arriving at that gap carries a great deal of moisture, and every bit of it condenses on the cold surface inside. That is how a gasket problem in Miami-Dade shows up as water on a tile floor while the same appliance in a dry climate shows nothing at all. It is also why we check the seals on a leak call, which surprises people who expected us to go straight for a hose.

### Why the drain blocks in the first place

The defrost drain is a small tube that carries meltwater from behind the freezer to a pan near the compressor. Food debris and biofilm narrow it, then a defrost cycle’s worth of water backs up and freezes, and from then on it only gets worse. Clearing it properly is a straightforward job. Clearing it by pouring hot water into the freezer is a temporary measure that most people end up repeating every few weeks until the real work is done.

A blocked defrost drain

Meltwater that cannot leave freezes where it stands, then overflows into the cabinet and onto the floor. The most common cause inside the appliance.

The water supply line or the filter housing

This is the one that reaches the cabinetry. If the water is clean and continuous, shut the supply off at the valve before anything else.

The ice maker or its fill tube

A fill tube that has frozen and diverted, or a jammed maker overfilling. If switching the ice maker off stops the water, it has answered the question.

Condensation from a door that no longer seals

In this climate, warm damp air meeting cold surfaces makes real water. It looks identical to a leak and it is a gasket problem.

A cracked or overflowing drain pan

The pan under the machine is meant to hold water and evaporate it. In a humid room it evaporates far more slowly than the design assumed.

Note where the puddle starts

Front, back or one side. It genuinely narrows the list before anybody opens anything.

Look under the crisper drawers

Ice or standing water there is the defrost drain, more or less every time.

Switch the ice maker off for two days

If the floor stays dry, you have found it without a tool in your hand.

Check the door seals with a sheet of paper

All the way around. In a humid house a seal that grips weakly makes water rather than just costing energy.

### The water is inside, not on the floor.

Then the defrost drain is the leading suspect, especially if it is pooling under the crisper drawers or freezing into a sheet at the bottom of the freezer. That is a repair rather than a cleaning habit.

### It only happens when it rains.

That is a strong indication of condensation rather than a leak, because the humidity in the room is the variable that changed. Check the seals first — the appliance may be working exactly as designed in air it was not designed for.
