# Whirlpool induction cooktop will not recognize the pan

### The magnet test, and then the position

Hold a fridge magnet against the base of the pan. If it grips firmly, the pan is induction cookware and the problem is elsewhere; if it barely holds or falls off, that pan will never work on this cooktop and nothing is wrong with the appliance. Then check the size and the position: the base needs to cover most of the marked zone and sit centered on it. A small saucepan on a large zone, or a pan pushed off to one side, produces exactly the same symbol as an unsuitable pan.

### What it usually means, by the kind of machine

Whirlpool sells one appliance in several forms — a top-loader with an agitator and one without, a front-loader, a stacked pair, a laundry tower and an all-in-one; a vented dryer, a ventless one and a heat pump — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A top-load washer has no drain pump filter to open and a front-loader does, which is the whole first hour of the same complaint on two machines.

- **Induction cooktop** — Each zone has a coil sized for a range of pan diameters. A small pan on a large zone is a genuine mismatch rather than a defect.
- **Induction range** — Same coils over an oven. A code that appears on the cooktop while the oven is normal still belongs to the cooktop control.
- **Mixed cookware** — Stainless with an aluminum core, copper and most glass will not work at all. Cast iron and magnetic stainless will.

The meaning is not published. We are not going to invent one. What that changes in practice is the order of work: on an induction cooktop showing an F code, the diagnosis is done at the appliance with measurements, and the code is used to confirm what was measured rather than to shortcut it. U u is the exception, and it is the one code on this branch where the maker states plainly what it means.

### Induction in a South Florida kitchen

These cooktops have electronics and a cooling fan directly under the glass, and they draw air from the cabinet below. A cabinet packed solid with pans, or a run with no ventilation gap, runs those electronics hotter than the design intends — and in a kitchen that is already at 80 degrees for much of the year, that margin matters. The pan is the wrong size for the zone

Too small a base on too large a coil. The cooktop cannot see enough metal to work with.

The pan is off center

Also in the maker's wording. Half a pan over the zone is not a pan as far as the coil is concerned.

A warped base

An old pan that no longer sits flat lifts away from the glass in the middle. It worked for years and then stopped, which makes it a confusing one.

The zone itself

If a known-good pan works on every zone but one, the cooktop is the problem and that is a real repair.

Do the magnet test on every pan you use

Whole sets fail it. This one test explains most induction calls in the first year of ownership.

Move the pan to a different zone

Works elsewhere, fails on one zone — that is the cooktop. Fails everywhere — that is the pan.

Check the base is flat

Put a straight edge across it. A rocking pan on a glass surface will not couple properly.

Write down any F code exactly

F0 E6, F7 E5, F0 EC and the rest are real published entries even where the meaning is not published, and the exact characters matter.

Then look at the base for warping and at the position on the zone before anything else. A pan that has been overheated dry can lift in the middle and stop coupling, and it looks identical to the pan that worked.
