# Whirlpool electric cooktop element will not heat

### Establish the pattern first

Work through every zone at a low setting and write down which ones heat and which do not. One dead zone with the others healthy is that zone's element or its switching. Two adjacent zones dead together often share a relay or a supply leg. Everything dead with a live display is a supply problem rather than a cooktop problem — an electric cooktop needs both legs of its double breaker, and losing one leaves the panel lit and the glass cold. - **Radiant glass** — Elements under a ceramic surface, switched by the control. A single dead zone with the others working is usually the element or its relay rather than the control.

Intermittent is usually a connection rather than a failed element — a receptacle on a coil cooktop, a terminal on a radiant one. It is worth booking rather than living with, because a loose connection under load gets hot.
