# Whirlpool washer door lock repair

### Getting your laundry out, then fixing the lock

A front-load Whirlpool holds the door shut while there is water in the drum and while the drum is still turning, so a lock that has failed can leave a full load sealed in. The first part of the visit is opening it without breaking the door: drain the machine at the filter, let the drum stop, then release the catch through the access at the front. After that comes why it failed, and the answer is usually mechanical rather than electrical — a strike out of alignment, a hinge that has dropped, or a door that has been shut with a shove for a year.

Get the door open safely

There is a manual release, and using it correctly is better than forcing a door that is holding a drum of water.

Drain the machine before opening the lock

Through the pump filter hose. A front loader that has stopped mid-cycle is full.

Test the lock and its wiring

The lock is a switch and a solenoid or a wax motor. Both halves are checked, and so is the connector, which browns with heat.

Check the hinge and the strike

A door that has dropped puts the strike a few millimeters out and destroys locks steadily. Fixing that is the difference between one repair and three.

Cycle the lock a dozen times

Locked, unlocked, mid-cycle interrupted, and with a full drum.

### Can I force it open myself in the meantime?

Drain it first at the filter door or you will empty the drum onto the floor. Beyond that, pulling on a locked door bends the strike, which means the new lock fails the same way. It is worth waiting.

### The door locks but the machine will not start.

Then the lock is probably closing without reporting closed. That is the same part and the same visit, and it is checked with a meter rather than by listening for the click.
