### Deciding whether this cabinet is worth the repair

Once the measurements are in there is a second conversation, and on this make it is the real one. A fan, a defrost heater, a sensor or a start relay on a Whirlpool are inexpensive parts fitted in an hour, and a cabinet that gets one is good for years. A sealed system on the same cabinet is a different order of money against a machine that did not cost a great deal new. So the visit ends with two numbers rather than a recommendation: what this repair costs, and what the cabinet has left. Owners of ordinary machines are entitled to that arithmetic.

Start with the things that cost nothing

Groceries stacked against the rear vents, a door held open by a drawer, demo mode left on by the store, a coil nobody has cleaned. Between them these close a meaningful share of these calls before a tool comes out of the van.

Put a thermometer in each compartment

For an hour. A cold freezer over a warm fresh food side is an air problem. Both compartments drifting up together is a different conversation entirely.

Say out loud what this cabinet cannot tell us

Where there is a flashing indicator or a temperature alarm we read it. On a top-freezer there is nothing to read at all, and anyone quoting you a code number for one has made it up.

Follow the air

Evaporator fan, damper, ducts and the coil itself. This is where most of the answers live and not one of them involves refrigerant.

Gauges before anybody says compressor

Pressures and compressor current. On a cabinet of a certain age that also means an honest word about whether the repair is worth more than the machine is.

### It is still freezing but the food side is warm. Is that better or worse?

Usually better and usually cheaper. One evaporator feeds both compartments on most of these cabinets, so cold below and warm above points at air movement or at defrost rather than at the sealed system, and both of those are ordinary repairs.

### Someone told me it is the compressor.

Nobody can know that without gauges and a current reading at the machine. It is the most over-diagnosed part on a cold appliance in South Florida, and on this make a blocked coil, a stalled fan and an iced evaporator all produce a warm cabinet that sounds exactly like it.
