### Testing a gasket instead of looking at one

A gasket that looks perfect can still be failing, so it is tested rather than inspected. A strip of paper shut in the door and pulled at intervals around the whole perimeter finds the flat spots. The magnet is checked for strength, the door for square, and the cabinet for level, because a machine leaning back an eighth of an inch closes its own doors and one leaning forward does not. In this climate a failing seal is not just wasted cold: humid air condenses inside the cabinet, freezes on the coil, and turns into a defrost repair a few months later.

Frost at the door edge and condensation on the trim are seal symptoms, not gas symptoms

The hinge and the leveling are checked first, because they cause half of these

Gaskets are ordered against the model, and handed doors are not interchangeable

Test the seal you have

A strip of paper closed in the door at several points around the frame. Where it pulls out freely, the seal is not sealing there.

Level the cabinet before condemning the gasket

A refrigerator that leans forward closes its own doors; one that leans back does not. Whirlpool's own pages start here and so do we.

Check the hinge and the door alignment

A sagging door will defeat a brand new gasket within a month.

Fit the new gasket without stretching it

It goes in warmed and even, seated corner by corner. A gasket forced into place is worse than the one it replaced.

Verify with the paper test again

All the way around, on both doors, with the machine standing where it will live.

### Can a gasket be revived rather than replaced?

Sometimes. A gasket stiff from cold sets flatter after a warm cloth and a little silicone on the magnet track, and a door that has dropped can be squared at the hinge. Both are tried first, because they cost nothing and they fix a real share of these calls.

### Are the seals interchangeable between doors?

No. They are handed and they are cut for a specific cabinet, so they are ordered against the model and serial rather than bought by size. A near-fit seals nowhere near well enough here.
