### A heavy assembly that has to close square

Two or three panes of glass, a pair of spring hinges under real tension, and a seal that decides how much heat stays inside. When a door stops closing square the oven cooks unevenly, runs longer to hold its setting, and puts heat onto the front of the range where a child can reach it. The hinges are replaced in pairs — one worn hinge means both have done the same work — and the seal is inspected with the door off, which is the only time it can be properly seen. Glass clouded between the panes is dealt with at the same visit.

Check the alignment

Inspect the hinges

Inner panels crack from twist rather than from impact, and a door that is opened wrongly during a repair breaks on the bench rather than in the kitchen.

Renew the gasket if it has gone hard

The rope seal takes a set with age and stops touching the frame at the top, which is precisely where the heat leaves.

Test the closure and the switch

Square close, even gap, and the door switch operating the light and the lock correctly.

That is the hinges, and it is worth doing promptly. A door that hangs even slightly open lets the cavity run hotter for longer to compensate, and the extra heat is what eventually reaches the control at the top of the range.

The door comes apart and the panes are cleaned as part of this job. It is one of the more satisfying repairs on the list and it does not require a part.
