# Whirlpool microwave repair

### The repair that is not a do-it-yourself job, and why

The capacitor in one of these holds enough charge to be lethal long after the machine is unplugged, which is why this is the one appliance on the site we will actively talk an owner out of opening. What actually fails most often is far more mundane: three small interlock switches in the door frame, one of which sinks the whole machine when it stops reporting the door as shut. On this make there is usually a reading to start from as well — Whirlpool publishes far more coded detail for its over-the-range machines than for its countertop ones.

What this involves

Built-in and over-the-range machines, where the repair is worth doing

The capacitor is discharged before anything is touched, every time

On a countertop machine we will tell you when replacement is the better answer

Read the code

This make publishes an extensive microwave code set, including door and sensor readings. It is the fastest route into a machine that is otherwise a sealed box.

Discharge and test safely

The high-voltage capacitor holds a charge with the machine unplugged. This is not a homeowner repair and it is not treated as one.

Test the interlocks

Three switches in a specific order. A machine that blew its fuse when the door was opened has usually failed one of them, and replacing only the fuse repeats the failure.

Measure the high-voltage circuit

Diode, capacitor and magnetron, in that order, because the cheap parts fail more often than the expensive one.

Say when it is not worth repairing

A countertop machine is usually cheaper to replace than to repair. A built-in in cabinetry usually is not, and the difference is the whole conversation.

### It runs but the food stays cold.

That is the high-voltage circuit — the magnetron, the diode or the capacitor — and it is a real repair on a built-in or an over-the-range machine. On a countertop machine the same repair usually costs more than the appliance, and you will hear that rather than a quote.

### Sparking inside. Is it dangerous?

Stop using it. Sparking is usually the waveguide cover or metal in the cavity rather than anything deep, and both are inexpensive to put right — but running it in that state damages the expensive part.

### Is a countertop machine ever worth fixing?

Rarely, and you will be told so before a visit rather than after one. A built-in or an over-the-range machine is a different matter: the cabinet is fitted, the replacement is a carpentry job as well as an appliance one, and the repair usually wins.
