# Whirlpool ice maker water line and fill valve service

### The valve behind the machine that has not moved in twenty years

In older South Florida buildings the supply comes off a saddle fitting or a small stop valve that nobody has touched since the kitchen was fitted, and it is the part of this job most likely to cause trouble. It half-closes, it weeps when it is moved, and it restricts enough to starve the fill without stopping it. So the pressure gets measured at the machine rather than assumed, and where the shutoff is not serviceable that is said plainly before anything else is opened. The fill tube itself is the other half: in this climate it ices at the mouth.

What this involves

Thin, hollow or short-filled cubes point at water, not at the module

A fill tube that ices at the mouth is a defrost-side symptom and is treated as one

Supply pressure at the machine is measured rather than assumed

Measure the fill

A timed fill into a measuring cup tells you in one cycle whether the water side is healthy.

Work back along the line

Fill tube, valve, filter, shutoff and supply pressure. Old saddle valves and half-closed shutoffs behind cabinets are extremely common in older South Florida kitchens.

Clear and warm the fill tube

Ice at the mouth of the tube is cleared, and the reason it formed — usually a weak fill or a warm spot in the door — is dealt with rather than left.

Test the valve electrically and hydraulically

A valve can be energized and still not open at low pressure. Both halves get checked.

Run three harvests before closing

One good cycle proves nothing on an ice maker.

### How much water should the mold actually get?

It is timed rather than eyeballed. A fill runs for a set number of seconds, so a short cube is arithmetic: either pressure is low or the valve is restricted. That measurement is what separates a valve replacement from a plumbing conversation.

### Can you replace the shutoff while you are there?
