# Whirlpool ice maker repair

### Four complaints that look alike and are not

No ice at all, thin or hollow cubes, a bin that has welded itself into one block, and ice that tastes of everything else in the freezer. Each of those points somewhere different: the first at the module or the freezer temperature, the second at water, the third at a cycle that is melting and refreezing, and the last at a seal or a filter. On this make the module comes out as a sealed assembly, which keeps the repair contained and predictable — an advantage of a make whose parts are ordinary and stocked rather than made to order.

What this involves

No ice, thin ice and clumped ice are three different problems

Freezer temperature is checked first, because the module will not cycle if it is too warm

The module usually comes out as an assembly, which keeps the job contained

Check the freezer temperature first

The mold thermostat has to reach its cut-in temperature before anything harvests. A freezer running a few degrees warm stops ice production without any part having failed.

Confirm water is arriving

Fill volume and fill timing. Thin or hollow cubes are almost always a water-side problem rather than a module one.

Test the harvest cycle

The module is cycled manually and watched all the way through eject, so we see which stage it stops at.

Look at the bin and the shutoff

A stuck arm or infrared shutoff stops production with a perfectly healthy module, and it reads to the owner as a dead ice maker.

Replace the assembly where that is the honest answer

On these modules the parts inside are rarely worth separating, and a whole assembly is usually both cheaper and more reliable than chasing it.

### Is it worth repairing or should I just buy bags of ice?

That is a fair question and the answer is usually the module, because on this make it is a modest part and one visit. Where it stops being worth it is a cabinet already needing other work, and we will say so rather than fitting a new ice maker into a failing refrigerator.

### It stopped after we changed the water filter.

Check the arm is down and the line has been purged. A partially seated filter restricts flow enough to starve the mold without stopping the dispenser, and that produces exactly the hollow cubes people describe.
