# Whirlpool gas dryer igniter and valve repair

### An intermittent flame is not something to live with

The sequence is short and it is worth knowing: the igniter glows, the flame sensor sees it is hot, the valve coils open, the gas lights, the sensor closes and the igniter goes out. Any one of those four failing produces the same complaint — a dryer that tumbles cold, sometimes. The pattern owners describe is the giveaway: it lights on the third attempt, then the fifth, then not at all. That is a circuit degrading rather than a part that has died, and on a gas appliance it gets fixed now rather than watched.

Igniter, flame sensor and valve coils tested as one circuit

Watch it try to light

The igniter glowing without the valve opening, and the valve opening without a flame holding, are two different repairs and they are visible in ten seconds.

Test the flame sensor

It has to be closed cold for the igniter to receive power. This is the part that gets missed and it is the cheapest one in the group.

Test the valve coils

Resistance on each, and a check that they hold once open. Coils fail warm, which is why the machine works for the first load of the day.

Check the airflow while it is apart

Restricted venting overheats this whole assembly and shortens everything in it.

Leak-test and document

Every joint that was disturbed, tested, and the result recorded.

### Can I keep using it while it still lights sometimes?

We would rather you did not, and never overnight or while the unit is empty. A gas appliance that is not igniting reliably is not a convenience problem.

### Do you leak-test the connection afterwards?

Every time, and the result is written down and left with you. Anything that involves disconnecting a gas line ends with a test, not with a sniff.

### Can I run it while I wait for the appointment?

We would rather you did not run it unattended. If you must use it, stay in the unit, and stop entirely if you smell gas at any point.
