# Whirlpool gas burner and igniter repair

### Nothing to look up, so it is read off the flame

This is the one cooking appliance where Whirlpool publishes no readings at all — the maker has 52 support pages for its gas cooktops and not one of them is a code page — so everything here is done with eyes, a meter and a manometer. The flame itself is the instrument: color, shape, how evenly it carries around the ring, whether it lifts off the ports. In this humidity the commonest call of all is endless clicking, and the commonest cause is moisture around the electrode or a burner cap sitting a millimeter out of its seat after a wash.

What this involves

No published codes on this appliance — this one is diagnosed, not read

Endless clicking is usually moisture or a misplaced burner cap, not a part

Flame color and shape are read as the diagnostic they are

Look at the burner caps and ports

A cap sitting a millimeter out of place, or ports blocked by a boil-over, causes most of the clicking calls in this city.

Dry it out before condemning anything

A spilled pot, a wet cleaning, or humidity in an open kitchen will make an ignition system click continuously and then stop on its own.

Read the flame

Yellow, lifting, or uneven flames are a gas-supply or an air-shutter question, and this make publishes separate pages for natural gas and converted LP behavior.

Test the igniters and the spark module

One shorted electrode makes every burner on the cooktop click. That is why replacing the burner you were using rarely fixes it.

Leak-test after any gas work

Every joint disturbed, tested, with the result recorded.

### One burner clicks and the others light. Is that one part?

Usually not a part at all. A spark module fires every electrode at once, so clicking that continues after a burner lights points at that burner's cap, its ports or moisture — and drying the cap and reseating it fixes a surprising share of these before we are needed.

### I can smell gas near the range.

Turn it off at the valve, open a window, do not use anything electrical near it, and if the smell is strong leave and call the gas utility before you call us.

### Is it safe to keep cooking on the other burners?

If there is no smell of gas and the other burners light and hold a steady blue flame, yes. A burner that lights slowly and then whumps is worth stopping with until it has been looked at.
