### Miami buildings put the duct in the worst possible places

A house with three feet of duct through the wall is the easy version. What we mostly meet here is a condominium with a run inside the wall to a roof termination four floors up, sometimes shared with other units, sometimes with a booster fan nobody has thought about since the building was finished. Lint packs into the horizontal sections and into the outside flap, drying times climb, and the machine starts reporting the restriction itself. The job is the whole run — the transition behind the machine, the duct, and the termination — measured before and after.

Clear the whole run

Machine to wall, through the wall, and the hood outside. A hood flap glued shut with lint is extremely common on this coast and it defeats a clean duct entirely.

Clean the machine side too

The lint screen housing, the blower wheel and the internal duct hold as much as the wall run does.

Fix the transition

Crushed foil and long flexible runs behind the machine undo the work within months. Rigid or semi-rigid, and the shortest route the room allows.

Reset and re-measure

The restricted-vent indication cleared and a timed dry run to confirm it stays clear.

### How often does this need doing in a building like mine?

Annually for a household doing several loads a week, and more often on a long or shared run. The practical measure is drying time: when a normal load starts needing two cycles, the duct is already well down the road.

### The building says the risers are their responsibility.

Often true, and we will tell you where our work ends and the association's begins, in writing, so you have something to hand the management office rather than an opinion.

### Is a longer drying time really a safety matter?

It is the warning sign, yes. Lint packed into a duct is fuel next to a heat source, and the restriction that makes a load take two cycles is the same restriction that makes the machine run hotter than it was designed to.
