# Whirlpool dryer moisture sensor service

### Two metal strips, and what softener does to them

An automatic cycle decides the load is dry by measuring across two metal bars inside the drum opening. Fabric softener and dryer sheets leave a film on them, and a filmed sensor reads damp clothes as dry and stops early — or, when the drum itself is coated, reads dry clothes as damp and runs for an hour past the end. Both complaints arrive at this page and both usually end with cleaning rather than a part. Verification is a wet load run through with a meter on the sensor, not a guess at whether it feels better afterwards.

What this involves

Cycles that end too soon or run far too long usually start here

Often a cleaning job rather than a part

The vent is checked with it, because both produce long cycles

Test the sensor

Bridged and open, watching what the control does. The machine's response tells you whether the strips or the board is reading wrong.

Clean the strips properly

Fine abrasive and alcohol. Softener film is invisible and it is the whole problem in most of these.

Check the harness behind the drum front

It flexes and chafes. A broken wire reads exactly like a failed sensor.

Rule out the vent

A restricted duct produces long automatic cycles with a perfectly good sensor, so the two are separated before anything is replaced.

Run an automatic cycle to completion

With a real load, and the clothes checked at the end rather than the display.

### Timed dry works fine. Can I just use that?

You can, and plenty of people do. It costs more in power and it is harder on the clothes, because a timed cycle keeps heating after the load is dry. The sensor exists to stop exactly that.

### Could it be the vent instead?

It can present identically, so both get checked on the visit. A restricted duct also produces a cycle that never ends, and separating the two before anybody buys a part is the point of the appointment.
