A dryer that hums without turning has parted its belt. A dryer that sounds like a train has worn its rollers, its idler or its rear bearing. Reaching any of them means most of the machine coming apart, which is why they are replaced as a set: the parts together cost little on this make and the labor is the same whether one is changed or four. The blower wheel and the duct behind it get cleaned while everything is open, because it is the only time either is reachable without a second appointment.

For a while, and not indefinitely. A worn roller eventually lets the drum sit against the housing, and a seized one can score the drum, which turns an ordinary repair into a machine that is no longer worth repairing.

### Is a fifteen-year-old dryer worth this?

On this make, usually yes. A dryer is a simple machine and the wear parts are inexpensive, so the arithmetic on an old dryer is much friendlier than it is on an old washer.
