### Finding it before quoting it

A leak is traced rather than guessed, because the same puddle comes from parts that cost very different amounts. The machine is run with the toe panel off and watched: a bead at the bottom of the door is the gasket or the vent, a drip at the side is a hose clamp, water tracking from under the tub is the sump seal or the pump. The cabinet floor and the base of the run get checked at the same time, because in most kitchens here the damage under the counter has been quietly happening longer than the visible puddle has.

Run it and watch

With a mirror and a light, through a fill and a wash. A leak described from memory is a different leak from the one the machine actually has.

Check the door gasket and the vent

The gasket hardens with age and the vent at the top of the door can wet the front of a cabinet in a way that looks like a door seal problem.

Check the connections underneath

Fill valve, drain hose clamp and the sump. Most of what is found here is a clamp rather than a part.

Test the sump and pump seals

A weeping seal leaves mineral tracks. Those tracks are the evidence, not the wet floor.

Say plainly when the tub has gone

A cracked or corroded tub is not a repair, and we will tell you that instead of selling you a part that will not hold.

### Is a leaking dishwasher safe to keep using until you come?

Turn it off at the supply and stop running it. Almost all the cost of a dishwasher leak is cabinet and floor rather than machine, and that cost accumulates every cycle.

### What if it is the tub itself?

Then it is a replacement conversation and you will hear it straight. A cracked or corroded tub is the one source on this list that is not worth repairing on a machine at this price.
