# Whirlpool dishwasher drain and pump repair

### The five-minute version of this repair, checked first

A new disposer fitted without the knockout plug being punched out leaves a Whirlpool dishwasher draining into a sealed wall, and it presents exactly as a dead pump. So does a drain hose kinked behind the cabinet when the machine was pushed back, and a high loop that was never made. Those three cost nothing and account for a real share of these calls, which is why they come before the machine is opened. What is left after them is a filter packed solid, a check valve stuck, or a pump with something in the impeller.

Clear the filter and the sump

The filter cylinder unscrews and the mesh lifts out. Under it is glass, labels and bone, and this alone fixes a substantial share of these calls.

Check the disposal connection

A new disposal with the knockout plug still in place stops a dishwasher draining completely, and it is the first thing to rule out after any kitchen work.

Read what the machine is reporting

Whirlpool documents its dishwasher errors as codes and as counted light sequences — a number of flashes, a pause, another number. Both are published, both are read, and the count has to be exact.

Test the drain pump

Resistance and current, and the impeller checked for the object that stopped it. Pumps are more often jammed than dead.

Check the hose loop and the air gap

A drain hose that has lost its high loop siphons dirty water back into a clean machine, and that reads as a wash performance problem.

### There is water in the bottom but it drains eventually. Is that still a repair?

It is worth doing, yes. A machine that drains slowly leaves standing water on the filter between cycles, and that is where the smell people blame on the machine actually comes from.

### Should I run a cleaner through it first?

It rarely hurts and it occasionally helps a slow drain, but it does nothing for a plug that was never knocked out or a hose with a kink in it. If the water has appeared suddenly rather than gradually, it is mechanical.

### Can I check the disposer plug myself?

You can look. Disconnect the dishwasher hose at the disposer inlet and shine a light in — if there is a solid disc of plastic in there it was never knocked out. Anything past looking is worth leaving, because the hose clamp is easy to leave leaking.
