# Whirlpool diagnostic visit

### What the hour is actually spent on

Ten minutes of it is reading, if the machine is one that reads. The rest is a meter: continuity across an element, resistance at a sensor, current at a compressor, water pressure at the tap behind the machine. Then the part of the visit that matters most on this make — the arithmetic. A Whirlpool is an ordinary-priced machine with ordinary-priced parts, so the line between worth repairing and worth replacing is a real line and it moves with the age of the cabinet. You get told which side of it you are on, in writing, before anything is ordered.

What this involves

Whether this appliance talks at all decides how the visit starts

Laundry and cooking almost always have a code; the cold side almost never does

Whatever we find goes to you in writing, and the visit comes off the repair

Read the display before anything is reset

F2 E1, F7 E1, Sud, AF, uL, LF — the code is information and it is gone the moment the power is pulled. Whirlpool documents these individually, so the exact characters matter: F0 E1 and F0 E2 are not the same reading.

Establish which machine this actually is

Whirlpool sells top-load and front-load washers, vented, gas, heat pump and HybridCare dryers, and a Laundry Tower that is two machines behind one panel. The same code does not read the same way across them, so the model number decides which page applies.

Expect silence from the cold side

On a top-freezer refrigerator or an upright freezer this make publishes no code list at all. There the diagnosis is temperature readings, airflow and current draw, and anyone who quotes you a code number for a Whirlpool freezer has invented it.

Hear the history

When it started, whether it was sudden, and what changed in the house that week. A moved machine, a storm outage or a new detergent explains a surprising share of these calls.

Put it in writing

What it is, what it takes, and a from-price. Nothing is opened, ordered or charged before you have agreed to it, and the diagnostic is credited toward the repair.

### What do you need from me before the visit?

The model and serial number off the sticker, which is inside the door on a washer, behind the kick plate on a dishwasher and on the frame of a refrigerator. Whirlpool revises parts inside a model run, so the serial decides which version is ordered. A photograph of the sticker is enough.

### What if it turns out to be nothing?

The visit is still charged, and we would rather talk you out of it on the phone. A control lock left on, a disposer plug never knocked out and a showroom demo mode all look like repairs and are none of them. If what you describe fits one of those, you will hear it before you book.

### Does the visit come off the repair if I go ahead?

Yes. The diagnostic is credited toward the work when you accept the quote on the same visit, which is the ordinary outcome on this make because the part is usually on the van.
