# Whirlpool commercial ice machine repair

### Miami water is what breaks these, not Miami heat

The supply here is hard, and a machine that freezes water all day concentrates everything the water is carrying onto the evaporator and into the pump. Scale is the first suspect, then the drain, then the ambient temperature of the room the machine has been shut into. Whirlpool's freestanding ice equipment reports through indicator lights rather than a code display, so there is nothing here to look up: the diagnosis is water pressure, water temperature, the ice cycle timed with a watch, and what the harvest looks like when it finally comes off the plate.

Cleaning and sanitizing done properly as part of the repair

Establish what it is doing and when

No ice, slow ice, thin or hollow cubes, or ice that will not release from the plate are four different problems with four different starting points.

Look at the water before the machine

Supply pressure, the inlet valve, the filter, and the scale that South Florida water leaves on a freezing plate. A great many of these are a water problem with a refrigeration bill attached.

Check the heat rejection

Condenser, fan and the clearance around the cabinet. An ice maker built into millwork in an unconditioned room is fighting the room.

Read the indicator lights

Whirlpool documents the cleaning, filter and service lights on its freestanding machines. They are not a code table and they should not be sold to you as one, but they narrow it.

Clean, sanitize and then measure output

The machine is put back into service against a measured harvest cycle rather than a hopeful one.

### How often does one of these need cleaning?

On this water, twice a year is realistic for a bar or a clinic and quarterly for anything running through a Miami summer. A machine cleaned on schedule rarely needs us for anything else.

### The ice is cloudy and tastes of the room. Is that a repair?

Usually not a mechanical one. Cloudy ice points at the water and the cleaning cycle; taste points at what is stored in the bin and at the filter. Both are dealt with on the same visit.
