# Whirlpool appliance installation

### The things an old building does to a new machine

The opening in a 1970s Miami condominium is rarely the size the specification sheet expects, and the shutoff valve behind the machine has usually not been turned since it was fitted. Both are found in the first fifteen minutes or they are found by a flood. A dryer arrives with no cord because the building might be three-prong or four-prong. A range arrives configured for one gas and the line carries the other. None of that is exotic on this make, it is simply what a replacement means in this housing stock, and it is why the fitting is a job rather than a delivery.

What this involves

The hour after the delivery truck leaves, which is the hour nobody is paid for

Leveling done with a level and the lock nuts tightened, on every machine that has feet

Gas joints leak-tested and the result written down

Measure the opening before the old machine goes out

Width, depth, door swing, circuit, tap and drain. Replacement appliances have grown over the last fifteen years and a great many South Florida condominium openings have not.

Deal with what the old machine left behind

A duct packed solid with lint, a shutoff valve that has not been turned since the building was new, a drain that only worked because the old hose happened to sit at an angle. A new machine inherits all three.

Level it and lock it

Front to back and side to side, every foot down, lock nuts tightened. On a washer this is not cosmetic: a machine on an unlevel floor will refuse full spin speed and will report the imbalance rather than the floor, and the owner reads that as a broken new appliance.

Vent the dryer so the machine stops complaining about it

Rigid or semi-rigid duct on the shortest run the room allows, and an exterior flap that actually opens. Whirlpool dryers measure their own restriction and report it, so a poor duct becomes a service call within months rather than a slow decline nobody notices.

Run one full cycle with you standing there

Every joint checked ten minutes afterwards, and the three things you will need pointed out: the drain pump filter, the water filter, and which feet adjust.

### The store said delivery includes installation. What is the difference?

A delivery crew connects and leaves, usually inside twenty minutes and usually without a level, a manometer or a leak test. What we do differently is measure the opening first, test the gas joints and write the result down, set the feet and tighten the lock nuts, and run a full cycle before leaving.

### Can you put a washer and dryer where there has never been one?

Sometimes, and the answer depends on the drain and the vent rather than on the machines. If there is nowhere to run a duct, this make sells a heat pump dryer and an all-in-one that need neither, and we will tell you which of the three routes your unit can actually take.
